Buying Gifts for Xmas: Easing The Financial Burden

Wouldn't it be fun if we could just buy everyone all the gifts for Xmas we wanted to and didn't have to worry about how much we spent?  Yeah, right, and now back to the real world!  Truth is most of us do not have unlimited funds to spend on presents for all those on our list.  Most of us need to set some kind of budget for our Christmas shopping.

There are a few good ways to help ease the sting of holiday spending, like  buying things throughout the year, setting aside funds in a special savings account and making sure we set out a budget and stick to it.

Too many of us wait until the last minute to do our shopping.  Not only is that extremely stressful, it also means we can end up spending more than we intended to as we frantically settle for things that don't necessarily fit into our budget.

If it's already December then buying throughout the year or opening a savings account are ideas that you'll have to through out the window (but try to remind yourself to do this next year -- or even at those infamous after Christmas sales!)

Sticking to a strict budget is one thing you can still implement though.  By planning out a realistic budget and sticking to it you'll avoid spending more than you had planned and you won't be so stressed out about blowing money on gifts for Xmas that really should be spent on things like housing, utilities, food, etc.

Sticking to your budget will also keep you from going into debt for presents and being stuck paying for them for months to come (plus interest!).  Try your best to use a "pay as you go" plan and not a "put it on plastic and worry about it later" plan.

Of course sometimes you may find that you've gone slightly over budget on a specific item so be sure to keep close track of what you're spending and try to cut  back on some other gift.

Keep your eyes open for sales and coupons.  There are always a lot of deals by retailers both online and off during the holidays and if you are a smart shopper you can find some real steals!

You don't have to spend a lot to make a gift special.  Sometimes the simplest gifts are the ones that mean the most to those we care about.  If things are really tight, as they are for so many this year especially, consider home made Christmas gifts like photos, baked goods or crafts that have your personal touch.

Last year we received a coupon for a week's worth of "dog sitting" from my daughter.  Since we travel occasionally and hate leaving our dog in a kennel (not to mention the expense) knowing that we can leave our pet with someone he knows makes our trip a little more enjoyable!

She dressed it up in a clever little book with photos of her dog "inviting" ours to come for a visit.  Needless to say it was a much appreciated gift!

When my kids were first starting out on their own I gave them coupon books for gifts that included home cooked meals, car repairs, gas money, etc.  That way I didn't have to spend the money all at once since they could collect their gifts throughout the year.  It really helped them out all year when they found themselves in need of a tank of gas!

These make good gift ideas for elderly grandparents (yard work, etc.) from young grandchildren.  Older grandchildren could include running errands, cooking, etc.  If money is tight (and even if it isn't) these kinds of creative Christmas gifts let the receiver know you've put some extra thought into their gifts.
